Madrid a Pie de Calle

Hoy es un gran día y aunque el post de hoy no tenga que ver con la cultura inglesa, debo de hacer este homenaje a mi abuelo y extraordinario fotoperiodista, Manuel Urech.

Hoy se presenta en Madrid, en la calle Larra 14, un libro del trabajo de mi abuelo con 200 inéditas fotografias que mi tio Miguel Ángel Urech ha digitalizado del archivo fotográfico de más de 100,000 imágenes.

Ediciones La Librería

Este libro significa mucho para mí, pues yo soy el origen del mismo. Resulta que el año pasado dejé un mensaje en un blog de La Librería que publicó una foto de mi abuelo. Ediciones Temporae, se puso en contacto conmigo y me pidió que, a su vez, les pusiera en contacto con mi tio Miguel Ángel, que es el que custodia el archivo fotográfico. Y de ahí, todo se ha ido hilando para crear un calendario 2013 y un precioso libro.

Today is a great day and although today's post has nothing to do with the English culture, I do this tribute to my grandfather and extraordinary photojournalist, Manuel Urech.

A book of my grandfather's work with 200 unpublished photographs that my uncle Miguel Angel Miguel Urech has digitized from the photographic archive of over 100,000 images, will be presented today in Madrid at 13h, on Calle Larra 14, 28004.

This book means a lot to me, because I am the origin :-) It turns out that last year I left a message on a blog which published a photo from my grandfather. Then Temporae publisher, contacted me and asked me, in turn, to put them in touch with my uncle Miguel Angel, who is the guardian of the photographic archive. And from there, everything went spinning to create a calendar 2013 and a beautiful book.

Happy New Diwali !

In 2003, I was living in UK and I was invited to a Diwali festival. I will remember it with a warm heart because was an extraordinary experience in my life, even if I am not practice Hinduism myself. People get on together to celebrate, pray and eat (the food was delicious!). Also offer food to the Lakshmí deity who is the main figure of this festival.
Since this occasion, I really respect this time and it means something to me too.
Tonight we are celebrating "my diwali" at home and the feeling is great!

Here is a bit of history I found online, if you are curious to know more about.

Diwali is a religious festival known as the "festival of lights", celebrating members of various religions in India, such as Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism.

During Diwali, held once a year, people debuts new clothes, share sweets and explodes firecrackers and fireworks. It is the turn of the Hindu year, and one of the most significant and joyous nights of the year.

The presiding deity this festival is Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. She is the award of prosperity and wealth. Also venerate the god Ganesha and Goddess Kali.

The festival takes place between October 21st and November 18th, and can last four or five days. It commemorates the death of the demon Narakasura at the hands of Krishna and the release of sixteen thousand maidens he had imprisoned. Also welcomes the return to the city of Prince Rama of Ayodhya after his victory over Ravana, the demon king. According to legend, the inhabitants of the city filled the walls and roofs with lamps that Rāma could easily find your way. Thus began the tradition of lighting a multitude of lights at night.

The houses are cleaned and decorated with special various reasons and oil lamps or candles that are lit at sunset. It is usual to hold a meal of savory and sweet dishes, giving gifts to people nearby and family, fireworks and games. It is time to renew the books, do general cleaning, replace some household items and paint and decorate for the coming year. Traditionally, the goddess favor specially who are reconciled to their enemies. 

We recommend installing an altar in a special place where the house of Lakshmi present an image which will be offered flowers, incense and coins while repeating the mantra:

    Sri Maha-om namah Lakṣmīyai
    Om! A Great Lady-Fortune give obeisances. 

At nightfall open all windows and doors of houses and in each of them is made an offer of light with an oil lamp or candle, repeating the same mantra, that Lakshmi among the rest of the year. Also throw paper boats or lamps lighted the sacred rivers, the farther they go, the greater the happiness in the coming year and some designs are developed called Manora, which are some drawings on the walls and are decorated for the festival . A sunrise ritual is washing the head, which has the same merit as bathing in the sacred Ganges River.

The symbolism of the festival is to man's need to move towards the light of truth from ignorance and unhappiness, obtaining the victory of Dharma (virtue) over adharma (lack of virtue).

En 2003, yo estaba viviendo en el Reino Unido y me invitaron a un festival de Diwali. Lo recordaré siempre con un corazón cálido porque fue una experiencia maravillosa en mi vida, incluso si no practico el hinduismo. Las personas se reúnen para celebrar, orar y comer (la comida estaba deliciosa!). También se ofrece comida a la diosa Lakshmi, que es la figura principal de este festival.

Desde esa ocasión, realmente respeto este festival y significa algo para mí también. Esta noche estamos celebrando "mi diwali" en casa y la sensación es genial!

Aquí hay os dejo un poco de la historia que encontré online, por si tenéis curiosidad por saber más.

Diwali es una fiesta religiosa conocida también como el «festival de las luces», que celebran miembros de varias religiones en India, como el hinduismo, el sijismo y el jainismo.

Durante el Diwali, celebrado una vez al año, la gente estrena nuevas ropas, comparte dulces y hace explotar petardos y fuegos artificiales. Es la entrada del nuevo año hindú, y una de las noches más significativas y alegres del año.



La divinidad que preside esta festividad es Lakshmí, consorte del dios Vishnú. Ella es quien otorga la prosperidad y la riqueza. También se veneran al dios Ganesha y a la diosa Kali.

La fiesta tiene lugar entre el 21 de octubre y el 18 de noviembre, y puede durar cuatro o cinco días. Conmemora la muerte del demonio Narakasura a manos de Krishna y la liberación de dieciséis mil doncellas que éste tenía prisioneras. Celebra también el regreso a la ciudad de Ayodhyā del príncipe Rāma tras su victoria sobre Rāvaṇa, rey de los demonios. Según la leyenda, los habitantes de la ciudad llenaron las murallas y los tejados con lámparas para que Rāma pudiera encontrar fácilmente el camino. De ahí comenzó la tradición de encender multitud de luces durante la noche.
Las casas se limpian de forma especial y se adornan con diversos motivos y lámparas de aceite o velas que se encienden al atardecer. Es usual celebrar una comida compuesta de sabrosos platos y dulces, hacer regalos a las personas cercanas y familiares, los fuegos artificiales y los juegos. Es el momento para renovar los libros de cuentas, hacer limpieza general, reemplazar algunos enseres del hogar y pintarlo y decorarlo para el año entrante. Es tradición que la diosa favorecerá de forma especial a quienes se reconcilien con sus enemigos.
Se aconseja instalar un altar en un lugar preferente de las casas donde este presente una imagen de Lakshmí a la que se le ofrecerán flores, incienso y monedas mientras se repite el mantra:

oṃ Śrī Mahā-Lakṣmīyai namah
¡Om! A la Señora Gran-Fortuna le doy reverencias.

Al anochecer se abren todas las ventanas y puertas de las casas y en cada una de ellas se realiza un ofrecimiento de luz con una lámpara de aceite o una vela, repitiendo el mismo mantra, para que Lakshmí entre para el resto del año. También se lanzan barcos de papel o lamparillas encendidas a los ríos sagrados, cuanto más lejos vayan, mayor será la felicidad en el año venidero y se elaboran unos diseños llamados manorā, que son unos dibujos hechos en las paredes y que se adornan durante el festival. A la salida del sol es de ritual lavarse la cabeza, lo que tiene el mismo mérito que bañarse en el sagrado río el Ganges.

El simbolismo de la fiesta consiste en la necesidad del hombre de avanzar hacia la luz de la Verdad desde la ignorancia y la infelicidad, es decir, obtener la victoria del dharma (la virtud) sobre adharma (falta de virtud).

Stevenage Knitting Company Ltd

I want to share something precious today because tomorrow will be two years since I landed in UK for my second time... 

Just opposite the house we live now, there used to be a great Knitting Company. The factory started in 1926 and it was supplying local shops in North Hertfordshire. Then gradually became a good trader to Lillywhites, Harrods and Mark & Spencer. I think they close down for various reasons last year...such a pity!

In this video, it is explain how they used to work manually and mechanically. A great jump into time and arts & crafts as it used to be. There is also a facebook page with some photos from inside the factory. Love it!

And another data, before the factory, it used to be a day nursery (i just found a photo)! WOW!!

Day nursery - Guardería

Hoy quiero compartir algo precioso porque mañana hará dos años desde que aterricé en UK por segunda vez...

Justo enfrente de la casa en la que vivimos ahora, solía haber una gran empresa que hacía punto. La fábrica comenzó en 1926 y abastecía las tiendas locales en el Norte de Hertfordshire. Luego, gradualmente se convirtió en un buen comercio y distribuidor para empresas como Lillywhites, Harrods y Mark & ​​Spencer. Creo que cerraron por diversos motivos el año pasado ... una pena!

 

En este vídeo (en inglés), se explica la forma en la que se solía trabajar de forma manual y mecánica. Un gran salto en el tiempo y en la forma artesanal, como solía ser. También hay una página de facebook con algunas fotos del interior de la fábrica. ¡Me encanta!

 

Y otro dato, antes de la fábrica, había una guardería (acabo de encontrar una foto - en el medio). WOW!

The art of Preserving

 With the glimpses of Autumn and the produce of our allotment, this weekend I felt inspiring by a book that Mark bought me recently: "The complete book of Preserving". Has lots of ideas and recipes, so far the best I could find around.

So, with some of delicious home grown tomatoes and the rest of the ingredients I managed to produce my first lovely and yammmy tomato chutney! 

 





Here it is the recipe for you to try. I believe, the taste will be slightly different from home grown tomatoes, so try to find a good variety in the supermarket or your local vegetable shop to do not dismiss the beauty of it.

For those who don´t know what is "chutney" as I did not myself neither... Chutney is a condiment made with a mixture of fruits and/or vegetables which are preserved by the addition of vinegar, salt and spices. Although they are now a popular and accepted preserve all over the world they actually originated in India - the name being derived from the Hindu word chatni.

Chutneys are very versatile: almost any combination of fruit or vegetable can be made into this delicious condiment. Long slow cooking, plenty of vinegar, sugar and spices, are all that is needed for one of the easiest ways of preserving fruit and vegetables.

Another tip: you need to sterilize the glass containers before putting any preserve in it or you will ruin the mix and will not last. Normally I boil them in a big pan for around 15 minutes and then I fill them with the mixture, close it with the tap and turn them upside down for 10 minutes, so the containers seal well. Later place them in a dry, dark space such a cupboard or in a pantry.

Con los destellos del Otoño y los productos de nuestra huerta, este fin de semana me sentí inspirada por un libro que Mark me compró hace poco: "El libro completo de las Conservas". Tiene un montón de ideas y recetas, lo mejor que he podido encontrar hasta ahora.

Así que, con un poco de ricos tomates cultivados en nuestra huerta y el resto de los ingredientes logré producir mi primera chutney de tomate... deliciosa y yammmy!

Os adjunto la receta para que probéis a hacerla. Creo que el sabor será un poco diferente si los tomates son de cosecha propia, así que tratar de encontrar una buena variedad en el supermercado o en una tienda de verduras locales, para no arruinar su belleza.

Chutney de Tomate Rojos:
1.75kg de tomates maduros, pelados y troceados
450gr manzanas de postre, peladas y troceadas sin pepitas
450gr de cebollas, peladas y troceadas
350gr de sultanas
350gr pasas
1 cucharadita de mostaza en polvo
2 cucharadita de pimienta de jamaica molida
1 cucharada de sal
1 cucharada de pimienta de cayena
675gr azúcar morena suave
900ml vinagre de malta

Colocar todos los ingredientes en una cacerola y llevar a ebullición. Bajar el fuego y cocinar a fuego lento, removiendo de vez en cuando, hasta que el chutney se espese. Embotellar, sellar y etiquetar.

Para áquellos que no saben lo que es "chutney", ya que yo tampoco lo sabía... Chutney es un condimento hecho con una mezcla de frutas y/ o verduras que se conservan mediante la adición de vinagre, sal y especias. Aunque ahora son más populares, se originó en la India - el nombre que se deriva de la palabra hindú chatni.

Los chutneys son muy versátiles: casi cualquier combinación de fruta o verdura se puede hacer en este delicioso condimento. Con una larga y lenta cocción, un montón de vinagre, azúcar y especias, son todo lo que se necesita para una de las maneras más fáciles de conservar frutas y verduras.

Otro consejo: Hay que esterilizar los envases de vidrio antes de llenarlos porque arruinará la mezcla y no va durará. Normalmente se esterilizan en una olla grande durante unos 15 minutos y luego se rellenan con la mezcla, cerrar con la tapa y ponerlos boca abajo durante 10 minutos, para que se selle bien el envase. Más tarde, colocarlos en un lugar seco y oscuro tal como un armario o en una despensa.

The Big Chair project

First time I landed in UK I fall in love of the chef Jamie Oliver´s food program and his charismatic personality. I also read his autobiography and follow his moves ever since.

This time he is behind The BIG Chair Project which is the brainchild of The Better Food Foundation, the charity founded by himself. Back in 2002, Jamie established a unique and pioneering restaurant group called Fifteen, that uses the magic of food to give young people a chance to have a better future. Ten years on, hundreds of apprentices have graduated from the programme, which trains unemployed youngsters to become professional chefs. With 2012 marking the 10th anniversary, it was time to do something a little celebratory to raise much-needed funds for the next 10 years.

La primera vez que aterricé en el Reino Unido me enamoré del programa de comida del chef Jamie Oliver y su personalidad carismática. También leí su autobiografía y sigo sus movimientos desde entonces.

 








Esta vez está detrás del proyecto La Silla Grande que es la Fundación Better Food, y la organización benéfica fundada por él mismo. En 2002, Jamie estableció un grupo de restaurante único y pionero llamado Fifteen, que utiliza la magia de los alimentos para dar a los jóvenes la oportunidad de tener un futuro mejor. Diez años después, cientos de aprendices se han graduado del programa, que forma a jóvenes desempleados para convertirse en chefs profesionales. Con 2012 marca el 10º aniversario, y era hora de hacer algo un poco festivo para recaudar los fondos tan necesarios para los próximos 10 años.

Returned to the Sea

I started this blog to write about British culture, events, customs, etc...
However, being always inspired cultures, all cultures and specially the Japanese one, it is hard not to mention some of the beauties and artists that this Eastern culture holds.

Empecé este blog para escribir sobre la cultura Británica, los acontecimientos, las costumbres, etc ...

A feast of Colour

Some weeks ago Bernay Laity, a colour consultant, write to me because she found my work and she wanted to feature it in the Home Heart magazine. And today "A feast of Colour" has been published :-) I am so happy! And I believe that this event will help to promote Gukuuki and find good work opportunities.

Hace algunas semanas Bernay Laity, una consultora de color, me escribió porque encontró mi trabajo y quería escribir sobre ello en la revista de Home Heart magazine. Y hoy, "Una fiesta de color" ha sido publicado :-) Estoy muy feliz! Y creo que este evento ayudará a promover Gukuuki y encontrar buenas oportunidades de trabajo.

Allotment Annual 2012 Show

This weekend has been really frantic and full of events. One that I want to share here is the prize that we won at the Allotment Annual 2012 Show where we entered four categories and we were reward with some prizes, an engraved shield and some money. We were so happy and rewarded after all the hard work that we had put in our almost first year allotment. Here are some memories of the event. Enjoy them :-)

Este fin de semana ha sido de locura y lleno de acontecimientos. Uno que quiero compartir aquí es el premio que ganamos en la Muestra Anual de la Asociación del cultivo, dónde participamos en cuatro categorías y nos recompensaron con unos premios, un escudo grabado y algo de dinero. Estábamos tan felices y fue una bonita recompensa ​​después de todo el duro trabajo que hemos puesto con nuestro huerto en el casi primer año. Estas son algunas de las fotos del evento. Have you realised that it is "raining doodles"? Everywhere you go they is a doodle print, even in Fashion walks as Aarti Vijay Gupta did for her winter/festive 2012. 

A doodle is an unfocused drawing made while a person's attention is otherwise occupied. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be abstract shapes. This could be a new big trend for textile print designers. Check your note books and see if you can make a "doodle pattern" out of any of your "unfocused" drawings. And keep enjoying the doodle movement!

Un "doodle" es un dibujo hecho mientras la atención de una persona está en otra parte. Doodles son dibujos sencillos que pueden tener un significado figurativo concreto o simplemente pueden ser formas abstractas.  

Ésto podría ser una nueva tendencia importante para los diseñadores de impresión textil. Revisar vuestros libros de notas y ver si se puede hacer un "patrón textil" de sus dibujos. Y a seguir disfrutando del movimiento doodle!

I am a certified Altruist

Today I received my "Blood Donor" card (as the one on the left) so I am officially recognized as a certified Altruist. This made me smile big and feel proud of myself thinking in how many lives I will be able to salve from now on. Just with a bit of determination and with true love. 

To celebrate it and because is a beautiful sunshine day, I went to have lunch with my partner and then to the local library for a good book in African textiles.

Hoy he recibido mi tarjeta de "Donante de sangre", así que estoy oficialmente reconocida como una altruista. Me ha encantado la noticia y recibir la tarjeta y me siento muy orgullosa de mi misma, al saber que con mi ayuda podré salvar muchas vidas a partir de ahora. Sólo con un poco de determinación y  amor verdadero.

Para celebrarlo y como hace un día precioso, me fui a comer con mi novio y luego a la biblioteca local para obtener un buen libro en textiles africanos.

Heatherwick Studio

After watching the Olympics Opening ceremony 2012 and being stunned by the beauty of the "Collective Torch" called the "Olympic cauldron", I have wondered who was the mind behind such an extraordinary idea.

An here is the person who created this fantastic "Olympic cauldron" that rendered the large-scale pattern on the ground that radiates the copper petals of a flower. Every group of athletes, carried these artifacts or "petals" which were laid out as offerings to come together for the Olympic Cauldron. What a piece of Art with an amazing aesthetics, never seen before.

Después de ver la ceremonia de Apertura de los Juegos Olímpicos 2012 y admirar la belleza de la "Antorcha Colectiva" también llamada el "pebetero olímpico", me preguntaba quién podría ser el cerebro detrás de esta extraordinaria idea.


Así pues, encontré a la persona que ha creado este fantástico "pebetero olímpico", que representa el patrón a gran escala, de los pétalos de una flor de cobre. Cada grupo de atletas, cargó estos artefactos o "pétalos" que fueron establecidos como ofrendas para reunirlos en el Pebetero Olímpico. ¡Qué obra de arte con una estética sorprendente!

Learning to See

Learning to See as Inge Druckrey teaches us in this 38-minute video is one of the most extraordinary gifts a Designer (specially Graphic Designer) can have, with the contrast Black and White, the evolution of a typography or the simplicity of an image. Inge Druckrey: Teaching to See remarks on the benefits of an education in art and design. 

This video applies to Graphic Designers however, in my experience as a Graphic Print Designer and Photographer, "Learning to See" is a great lesson that can be applied for an observant mind without closing boundaries of any type.

Aprendiendo a Ver como Inge Druckrey nos enseña en este video de 38 minutos (en inglés) es uno de los regalos más extraordinarios que un Diseñador (especialmente Diseñador Gráfico) puede tener, con la diferencia del Blanco y Negro, la evolución de la tipografía o la simplicidad de una imagen. Inge Druckrey: Enseñar a Ver, remarca las observaciones sobre los beneficios de una educación en arte y diseño.  

Este video se aplica a los Diseñadores Gráficos sin embargo, en mi experiencia como Diseñadora Gráfico-Textil y Fotógrafa, "Aprender a ver" es una gran lección que se puede aplicar para una mente perspicaz, sin cerrar las fronteras de ningún tipo.
