Today, for first time in my life, I donate some blood to save lives. I think is something really altruist and full of love.
I feel so bless.
The story begins when I started my relationship five years ago with Mark, my partner, although I always feel the need to give some because, maybe, one day we might need it too. Mark donates always that he can, because if you are ill or under medication you are not allow. We did talk several times about it when he did it and I felt so proud of him.
However, I used to have a great fear about needles or punching my body with needles... Strange, as yesterday when I was cleaning the house, and moving some books, a card of donating blood, felt on the floor and as I picked it, I thought to myself "I think is time for me to give some".
And this morning, as Mark left to work, he came back and told me that the NHS Blood organization was just 5 minutes away from home. He smiled to me and say, "try it".
I felt grateful in a way but still scare in another so, I decided to do a half and hour meditation and breathing techniques and when I felt ready, I went with no hesitation. I say to myself "Today is the day that you will overcome your big fears with needles".
When I arrived to the place, I saw lots of people and activity which made me feel good. I introduced myself as I beginner donor and assuring that everything was ok, even I asked if they were different size of needles, I will prefer a small one, but they said to me "we have only one size" and I panic for a moment! After filling the Donor Health Check (DHC) questionnaire, and while having a pint of water (500ml), I had a confidential discussion with a nurse and I felt a bit emotional, as in March, we lose our baby-to-be, and the discussion brought it back for some minutes.
We continue with the test as a tiny drop of blood was taken from my fingertip. This allowed them to check my
haemoglobin levels and ensure that giving blood won't make me anaemic. After the results, they said all it is okay, so I am able to donate blood. The quantity to donate is about
470ml of blood - this amount of blood is quickly replaced by our bodies.
Everybody was treating me very well and smiling and taking real care of me, which made me feel in good hands. Then, the moment of truth came along, I sat in the chair, Theresa pumped my left arm to find a suitable vein and I asked Wendy, the nurse that attended me, to talk to me. She was very good because she was telling me something funny and as I was laughing she put the needle through. I felt the jab although was a matter of seconds and then everything was alright. She gave me a leaflet to read with some exercises to do while I was donating, which I did, and the time went fast.
After giving the right amount of blood, the took off the big needle and I stay still for some minutes. Later they invited me to drink something (cold drinks) and eat some biscuits. I stay there for some minutes and then came back home, so happy! Not only I donate some blood today in a altruist way, I also overcome my big fears with needles! I feel so grateful and bless. I called Mark and we celebrated with a meal at lunch time in one of our fab-café and he feels so proud of me too.

Hoy, por primera vez en mi vida, doné un poco de sangre para salvar vidas. Creo que es algo realmente altruista y lleno de amor. Me siento tan bendecida.
La historia comienza cuando empecé mi relación hace cinco años con Mark, mi compañero y amigo, aunque yo siempre sentí la necesidad de donar porque, tal vez, algún día lo podríamos necesitar nosotros. Mark dona siempre que puede, porque si estás enfermo o bajo medicación no te dejan. Hemos hablado varias veces sobre el tema y siempre me he sentido muy orgullosa de él.
Sin embargo, yo tenía mucho miedo a las agujas o el sentimiento de pinchazo con agujas en mi cuerpo... Extraño, ayer, cuando estaba limpiando la casa, en el traslado de algunos libros, una tarjeta de donación de sangre, se cayó al suelo y cuando la cogí, me dije a mí misma "Creo que ya es hora".
Y esta mañana, cuando Mark se fué a trabajar, volvió a los pocos minutos y me dijo que el grupo de donación de sangre estaba a sólo 5 minutos de casa. Sonrió y me dijo: "pruébalo".
Me sentí agradecida por una parte, pero por otra un poco asustada, así que decidí hacer una meditación de media hora con técnicas de respiración y cuando me sentí lista, me fuí sin dudarlo. Me dije a mí misma "Hoy es el día en que voy a superar mis miedos con las agujas grandes".
Cuando llegué al lugar, vi un montón de gente y actividad que me hizo sentir bien. Me presenté como "primeriza" e incluso pregunté si había diferentes tamaños de agujas, pero me dijeron: "Es un tamaño único" y me entró pánico por un momento! Después de llenar el formulario sobre -la salud del donante (DHC)- y bebiendo medio litro de agua, tuve una conversación confidencial con una enfermera y me sentí un poco emocional, porque en marzo, perdimos nuestro bebé, y la conversación lo trajo de vuelta durante unos minutos.
Seguimos con la prueba y me tomaron una pequeña gota de sangre de mi dedo. Ésto les permitió comprobar mis niveles de hemoglobina y asegurarse de que la donación de sangre no me dejara anémica. Después de los resultados, dijeron que todo estaba bien, así que podía donar sangre. La cantidad a donar es de aproximadamente 470ml de sangre - que es rápidamente reemplazada por nuestros cuerpos.
Todo el mundo me trató muy bien y me cuidaron, lo cual me hizo sentir en buenas manos. Entonces, el momento de la verdad llegó, me senté en la silla, una enfermera Theresa, bombeó mi brazo izquiero para encontrar una vena adecuada y después Wendy, otra enfermera, me atendió. Le pedí que me hablara para distraerme un poco. Ella me dijo algo que me hizo reír y mientras me reía, ella aprovechó a ponerme la aguja. Sentí el pinchazo aunque fué cuestión de segundos y luego todo volvió a la normalidad. Me dieron un folleto con algunos ejercicios para hacer mientras donaba, lo que hizo que el tiempo pasar muy rápido.
Después de dar la cantidad correcta de sangre, me quitaron todo el atuendo y me dejaron reposar por unos minutos. Más tarde me invitaron a tomar algo (bebidas frías) y comer algunas galletas. Me quedé allí por algunos minutos y luego regresé a casa, tan feliz! No sólo fue importante donar un poco de sangre hoy de una manera altruista, también vencí mis miedos con las agujas! Me siento muy agradecida. Luego llamé a Mark y lo celebramos con una comida y me dijo que se siente muy orgulloso de mí.
Así que quería compartirlo aquí como una forma de estímulo y felicidad.
